West Ham United have had a £27m bid reportedly rejected by La Liga outfit Celta Vigo for Maxi Gomez – so the Premier League side need to raise funds.
West Ham United have added new players in pretty much every position since Manuel Pellegrini took over as their new manager at the start of the summer. But there is one area where The Hammers still look a little light – centre-forward.
Andy Carroll will miss the next few months with yet another injury while Javier Hernandez was very hit and miss in his debut season in claret and blue. So this explains why West Ham are hoping to bring in Maxi Gomez of Celta Vigo before the transfer window slams shut.
Radio Galega (01.32) reported that they have made a bid of £27 million for the Uruguayan powerhouse, who scored 18 goals in 32 games in his first season in European football last time out.
Celta want closer to £35 million, however. And considering that West Ham have already spent over £100 million on new signings, they appear to be at the point where they need to sell players in order to fund their next big investment.
The Mirror (2 August, page 58) is reporting that West Ham are set to get rid of five players in order to fund the move for Gomez – Sam Byram, Michail Antonio, Edmilson Fernandes and the 19-year-old Reece Oxford. The fifth player is Cheikhou Kouyate, who has already bagged the club £9.5 million from his move to Crystal Palace.
Of the aforementioned quartet, only Antonio can consider himself a first-team regular and he will be bumped down the pecking order should Yacine Brahimi arrive to provide competition for Felipe Anderson and Andriy Yarmolenko.
