Two of Mario Husillos’ West Ham United signings have the Premier League club’s owners less than impressed.
After spending over £100 million on new players this summer and making Manuel Pellegrini one of the highest paid managers in the Premier League, West Ham’s owners would have been expecting a better return on their investment.
But heading into the international break, the Hammers were bottom of the Premier League table having lost all four of their matches. And Pellegrini has so far been unable to create a coherent team out of a new look squad.
Although it is not just the Chilean who has had a questionable impact. Pellegrini insisted that Mario Husillos, who worked alongside the 64-year-old during that stellar spell at Malaga, was appointed director of football in the summer and given control over recruitment.
But, according to The Times, two of Husillos’ signings have not impressed the West Ham owners one bit, leaving a ‘black mark’ against his name.
It is claimed that co-owner David Sullivan only wanted to hand Jack Wilshere a one-year deal amid doubts surrounding his fitness. At the request of Husillos and Pellegrini, however, Sullivan backed down and handed the former Arsenal midfielder a three-year contract instead.
Wilshere, however, has struggled badly in midfield alongside Carlos Sanchez, the 32-year-old Colombian international who arrived on loan from Fiorentina.
Sanchez seemed an odd signing given that he struggled badly at Aston Villa and it was his stoppage-time mistake which gifted Wolves a 1-0 win at the London Stadium before the international break.
Wilshere and Sanchez have looked particularly poor in midfield – and this hasn’t done Husillos’ reputation any favours among the West Ham chiefs.
