West Ham United are confident that they have beaten Valencia in the race to sign Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez, according to the Daily Star, after agreeing to pay a club-record £45 million and trigger his release-clause.
After over a year of speculation, there is light at the end of the tunnel as West Ham fight to bring one of the most naturally-gifted goal-scorers in European football to the London Stadium.
Just a few days ago, the Hammers looked set to miss out with Valencia striking a deal to sign Gomez and send Santi Mina and Jorge Saenz to the Balaidos as a sweetener. The Star claims that West Ham are convinced they have got the job done after agreeing to pay his full, £45 million release clause while doubling the wages that Valencia had offered. The report adds that Gomez has had his ‘head turned’ by Manuel Pellegrini’s side with a medical now set to take place in the near future.
This is an almighty coup for West Ham and they deserve huge credit, not just for snatching Gomez from Valencia’s clutches when all seemed lost.
The Uruguayan is a real goal-machine, an old-school poacher who should thrive in English football. Forget Lucas Perez and Marko Arnautovic, Gomez is the striker who could really take West Ham to the next level.
