West Bromwich Albion are planning to sign Newcastle United loanee Salomon Rondon this summer but want £16 million for the striker, according to the Northern Echo.

After a prolonged transfer saga, Rondon finally sealed a season-long loan move to St James’ Park in August with Dwight Gayle going the other way. And he has impressed in black and white, scoring his sixth Premier League goal for the Magpies in the recent 2-1 win against Manchester City.

According to the Echo, Newcastle will have to stump up £16 million if they want to keep Rondon at St James’ Park on a permanent basis.

West Brom have received enquiries from a number of other clubs, including one Premier League team, and it is understood that they are refusing to let the Venezuela international go on the cheap, despite the fact that he has just a year left on his contract.

The Baggies are hoping to spark a bidding war though Newcastle do have one substantial advantage, West Brom are willing to include Gayle as part of a deal.

Gayle has scored 16 goals in 21 Championship starts for Darren Moore’s side and he is rated at £10 million, which could mean Newcastle only need to pay a £6 million surplus to snap up Rondon at the end of the season.

It remains to be seen, however, whether owner Mike Ashley is willing to stump up for a player who will turn 30 this year given his obsession with ‘re-sale value’.

West Brom paid £12 million to sign Rondon from Zenit in 2015, as reported by the BBC.
