Callum Smith is earning rave reviews at Dunfermline and appears to have caught the eye of both West Brom and Bristol City.

At the age of just 17, Callum Smith is already a regular in Dunfermline’s first-team. The teenage striker has played 11 games in all competitions this season for the Scottish second division club and his talent has not gone unnoticed.

According to The Courier, Premier League outfit West Brom and Championship high-flyers Bristol City both sent scouts to watch Smith in action as Dunfermline secured their place at the top of the table with a 3-0 win against Brechin City at the weekend.

It is not the first time the English pair have monitored the newly-capped Scotland Under-19 international either.

“Callum Smith showed that he has bags of potential,” Dunfermline team-mate Declan McManus told the Capital City Press after the youngster dazzled on his first senior start in a League Cup clash with top flight Hearts in July. “He was outstanding. He was up against international defenders and did not give them a minute of peace.

“For my goal, he did brilliantly on the flank and was really unselfish to play it across to me. He’s quick, strong, is a decent size and, importantly for a striker, he can finish when he gets an opportunity.

“We see him every day in training, but now the fans and everyone else watching can see that he has a big future.”

Bags of potential

Only Leeds United and Ipswich Town have scored more goals than Bristol City (17) in the Championship so far this season so Lee Johnson’s attacking style would surely suit the jet-heeled Smith.

West Brom, meanwhile, could offer one of Scotland’s brightest talents the opportunity to try his hand at the Premier League so early in his career.

The Baggies aren’t exactly prolific when it comes to developing young players so the prospect of the exciting Smith arriving at The Hawthorns will surely be welcomed with open arms.
