After getting rid of Jack Rodwell, League One Sunderland are bidding farewell to Wahbi Khazri too. He is expected to return to Ligue 1.

Finally, a breakthrough in Sunderland’s attempts to get a few of their high-earning misfits off the wage bill.
Rodwell, who made just one Championship appearance last season, was due to earn £43,000 in League One – which was actually a reduction on what he was picking up last season.

And Rodwell looks set to be joined in heading for the exit by Wahbi Khazri.
L’Equipe reported on Wednesday that the Tunisian international was desperate to finally seal his departure from Sunderland. And the Wearsiders were willing to accept bids of around £5 million, slightly more than half the fee Sunderland paid for Khazri when signing him from Bordeaux two years ago.

St Etienne had reportedly joined the race alongside a number of other French clubs to sign the 27-year-old, who shone in Ligue 1 during a loan spell at Rennes last season. And L’Equipe is now reporting that Khazri is set to join Les Verts having agreed a deal in principle.
After earning £5 million from the sale of Paddy McNair to Middlesbrough, making another hefty fee on £40,000-a-week Khazri while getting rid of Rodwell will ease some of the financial strain on Sunderland.
