Icelandic World Cup star Birkir Bjarnason is the latest player to be linked with a move away from Championship crisis-club Aston Villa.

Back in January 2017, Birkir Bjarnason snubbed a move to Turkish club Trabzonspor in order to put pen to paper on a switch to Aston Villa, according to Blick.

It was understood that the Icelandic international was dreaming of playing in the Premier League and therefore seemed to put his faith in Villa, who certainly had a squad and a manager capable of firing the club to promotion.

But after a year-and-a-half at Villa Park, Bjarnason is still a Championship player. Villa finished in the bottom half in 2016/17 and then missed out on promotion via a play-off final defeat to Fulham in May.

So it will be interesting to see whether 30-year-old Bjarnason is keen to remain at Villa Park with a financial crisis forcing the club to cash in on a number of their key players.

And, interestingly, Turkish publication Takvim is reporting that Trabzonspor are once again expressing an interest in the versatile midfielder.

It is understood that the Super Lig side are keen on Bjarnason and his Iceland teammate Rurik Gislason and are expected to make official moves in the near future.

Former Basel, Sampdoria and Pescara star Bjarnason has never really been a regular at Villa, starting just 11 Championship games last season, and he appeared to be on his way out in January until a return to Italy fell through.
