Report: Tottenham would have paid £26m for Rabiot but accept deal is unlikely

Spurs would love to bring PSG’s Ligue 1 champion Adrien Rabiot to the Premier League – but he’s reportedly heading for La Liga and Barcelona instead.

As far as Mousa Dembele replacements go, there aren’t many better than Adrien Rabiot.

The 23-year-old is one of the most complete young midfielders on the planet, a player with genuinely world class potential who already has 16 trophies on his CV thanks to six seasons in the Paris Saint-Germain first-team.

According to Sport, Tottenham were very interested in Rabiot and were prepared to pay £26 million in an attempt to land him on a cut-price fee. The six-time France international has just one year left on his PSG contract.

But it seems that Spurs’ hopes of pulling off one of the biggest coups anywhere in Europe has hit the rocks.

Sport add that Rabiot was not ‘seduced’ by the project on offer at Spurs. And it is understood that the North London giants have now accepted that Rabiot is either going to commit his future to PSG or join La Liga champions Barcelona.

Barca sent general manager Pep Segura and sporting director Eric Abidal to France in order to inform PSG of their interest in Rabiot two days ago. The Catalan club would be willing to pay around £30 million.

The report adds that PSG are doing everything in their power to keep Rabiot but might have to accept Barca’s offer for fears that he will leave on a free in a years’ time.

Rabiot was absolutely immense in PSG’s 4-0 Champions League victory over Barcelona in 2017. It might have been this display that triggers Barca’s interest.
