Spurs will need a new goalkeeper sooner rather than later but is Ugurcan Cakir good enough for Mauricio Pochettino’s Premier League strugglers?
Tottenham Hotspur are keeping tabs on Turkish international goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir, according to Hurriyet, with the Trabzonspor number one emerging as a potential long-term replacement for Hugo Lloris.
The French World Cup winner will be out for the remainder of 2019 after suffering a sickening dislocated elbow in last week’s 3-0 collapse at Brighton and Hove Albion.
But if there is one positive Spurs fans can take out of the situation, it’s that it might force the club to consider life without a long-serving shot-stopper who continues to look past his best with mistakes creeping into Lloris’s game at an alarming rate.
Paulo Gazzaniga is a solid enough back-up but Cakir could perhaps be a more suitable long-term successor for Lloris with the 23-year-old performing miracles almost on a weekly basis in Turkey.
Cakir, who has one cap for his country, hasn’t kept a clean sheet this season but he’s conceded just nine goals in seven games with Trabzonspor’s erratic defence indebted to a goalkeeper who is arguably the best in the country right now.
According to the Star, amid interest from Liverpool too, Cakir will cost around £14 million but that is a small price to pay for a man who could be Spurs’ number one for years to come.
