Marcus Edwards may never play a Premier League game under Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham Hotspur but is he Championship-bound with the Bees?
One-time Tottenham Hotspur wonder-kid Marcus Edwards could be on his way out this summer with Football London reporting that the forward is training with local neighbours Brentford.
It is three years now since Mauricio Pochettino made a rare man-management blunder. After starring in the pre-season tour of 2016, a teenage Edwards was likened to none other than Lionel Messi by the Spurs coach.
And with Edwards spending the next few seasons struggling to live up to such exalted expectations, playing just once for Tottenham’s first-team while failing to make an impression on loan at Norwich, Pochettino himself admitted that he regretted putting the fleet-footed winger ‘in the spotlight’ and publicly comparing him to arguably the greatest footballer of all time.
It seems that even an impressive loan spell in the Eredivisie with Excelsior won’t be enough to save his Tottenham career. Edwards produced the most successful dribbles in Dutch football last season while Excelsior team-mate Jeffry Fortes raved about his ‘bizarre’ talent.
“What he can do is really not normal, I have not experienced a better player in my career, and Mauricio Pochettino did not make that comparison with Messi for nothing,” Fortes told Voetbal International in February.
According to Football London, Edwards is now training with Brentford in an attempt to earn a contract at Griffin Park.
And given that a number Premier League players have earned their stripes with The Bees, from Andre Gray to Chris Mepham, Ezri Konsa and John Egan, a spell at Brentford could be exactly what Edwards needs to rejuvenate his career in English football.
