Inevitably, the future of Mauricio Pochettino has become the subject of intense debate since Lopetegui’s 5-1 El Classico humiliation away at Barcelona.
Pochettino only signed a new long-term deal in the summer, but the Argentine has been vocal about his frustration in North London, particularly with the stadium saga rumbling on and after being denied a single new signing in the most recent transfer window.
According to the Telegraph, Tottenham’s players are fearful that Pochettino could be on his way.
But reports in Italy are suggesting that the club have already identified a perfect replacement for the former Southampton and Espanyol coach – Massimiliano Allegri.
Calciomercato claims that Tottenham dream of bringing the trophy-hoarding Italian to North London should Pochettino leave for Madrid.
The 51-year-old is one of the most successful coaches of the modern era and already looks on track to lead Juventus to a fifth successive Serie A title since he replaced Antonio Conte in Turin in 2014. Allegri also guided AC Milan to their most recent Italian top flight success seven years ago.
But, as Calciomercato point out, a manager with Allegri’s status and reputation can expect to court attention from some of the ‘bigger’ clubs on the continent.
