Jordi Alba is facing an uncertain future at La Liga champions Barcelona with Tottenham Hotspur reportedly keen to sign the Spanish left-back this summer.
It has been well documented for some time that Tottenham Hotspur are after a new left-back to replace Danny Rose.
And if Spurs want to show that they mean business this summer, and are determined to transform from affable nearly-men into actual winners, signing the best left-back in world football would not be a bad place to start.
The 29-year-old former Valencia flyer might be the very best in his position right now. Since moving to the Camp Nou six years ago, Alba has won four La Liga titles, four Copa del Rey trophies and the Champions League in 2015.
And he has just had possibly the best season of his career. Alba assisted 12 goals in 2017/18 while scoring three himself in 48 games for Ernesto Valverde’s Calatan giants.
While Tottenham fans might scoff at the prospect of Alba moving to North London, they should not be so quick to rule this out. Speaking to Sport in May, Alba’s agent Vicente Fores expressed his frustration at Barcelona’s failure to offer his client the new contract they had allegedly promised 18 months ago.
“We are still waiting. It’s been a year and a half now,” Fores said.
“We don’t understand anything, maybe it’s normal for Barca or maybe they’re not happy with the performances of a player included in FIFA’s XI and who is the defender with the most assists in European football.”
Alba’s current deal has two years left to run and his release clause stands at around £53 million; the question is, will Tottenham make their move?
