Aitor Karanka’s Middlesbrough side were relegated from the Premier League in 2016/17 but the Spaniard is still on Swansea City’s radar.

Paul Clement, Manager of Swansea City looks dejected during the Premier League match between Swansea City and AFC Bournemouth at Liberty Stadium on November 25, 2017 in Swansea, Wales.

Swansea City’s decision to sack Paul Clement was wholly understandable with the club bottom of the Premier League and burdened with the lowest goals tally in the division.

The rumoured replacements, however, haven’t exactly captured the imagination. Sky Bet’s latest manager odds are a who’s who of coaches coming off the back of high-profile Premier League failures, from Tony Pulis to Louis van Gaal, Slaven Bilic to Ronald Koeman.

Then there’s the current favourite; Frank de Boer, fresh from being sacked after four winless games in charge of Crystal Palace.

And The Guardian reports that another manager whose last spell in the top flight ended in disappointment is also being considered by Swansea chiefs.

It is understood that they have sounded out Aitor Karanka about possibly taking over at the Liberty Stadium. Swansea are keen to get a new manager in place as soon as possible so it helps that the Spaniard is currently out of work.

Though the appointment of Karanka wouldn’t exactly scream out survival. After all, his only season in the Premier League ended with his Middlesbrough side being relegated and the manager himself sacked two months from the conclusion of a disappointing season.

Swansea fans have been critical of Clement’s cautious tactics all season but Karanka is hardly an exponent of Total Football. His toothless Boro side scored the least goals in the top flight last season – which doesn’t bode well for a Swansea team with just ten to their name in 2017/18.
