Swansea City wanted Gregory van der Wiel last summer and could get their man this time as he prepares to leave Fenerbahce.
It has been clear for some time that Gregory van der Wiel would be leaving Fenerbahce this summer.
The 29-year-old only joined from Paris Saint-Germain 12 months ago but endured a difficult debut season with the Istanbul club, falling out with head coach and fellow Dutchman Dick Advocaat and being excluded from the side between November and February.
Van der Wiel won 12 trophies in four years for PSG
In the end, Van Der Wiel returned to the fold to make 11 Super Lig starts as Fener finished a disappointing third but, with the Turkish giants in dire financial straits, they are keen to get the Dutch international off the wage bill.
Crystal Palace have been linked for some time, the Mirror claiming last week that new manager Frank de Boer was keen on a reunion with a player he coached for 18 months at Ajax.
Van Der Wiel would also provide some much needed competition for Joel Ward on the flank.
However, it appears that there is a new name in the frame. Milliyet claims that Swansea City are now considering a move for Van Der Wiel, who was once valued as one of Europe’s most highly-rated young full-backs when making his name as a precocious youngster in the Eredivisie.
Kyle Naughton signed a new three-year deal as recently as April but 34-year-old Angel Rangel does not appear to be a major part of manager Paul Clement’s plans at the Liberty Stadium. Therefore, a deal for Van Der Wiel would be welcomed.
Van der Wiel would give Paul Clement more options
This is not the first time Swansea have been linked with the 46-time Dutch international.
The Mirror claimed last year that they were interested when Van Der Wiel’s contract at PSG expired. However, it appears that they are now in a good position to finally get their man.
