Sunderland look set to get rid of two of their highest earning players, with Jack Rodwell and Bryan Oviedo allegedly leaving the Stadium of Light.

Jack Rodwell of Sunderland has a shot on goal in the first half during the pre season friendly between Hibernian and Sunderland at Easter Road on July 9, 2017 in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Jack Rodwell is not the only high-earner set to depart Sunderland in the near future.

Sport 24 reported at the start of the week that the £10 million misfit is in talks over a move to Greece with newly promoted Superleague side Aris. It is expected that Rodwell will move on a free transfer but Sunderland will be very pleased to get him off the wage bill.

The former England and Manchester City midfielder was earning around £70,000 a week last season.

And the Mirror (live blog, 7.24pm) reports that Sunderland have told left-back Bryan Oviedo that he can go as well. It is understood that the Black Cats are in advanced talks to agree settlement packages to get both him and Rodwell off the wage bill.

Oviedo moved to the Stadium of Light from Everton in January 2017 for around £1.8 million but has been powerless to prevent his new club suffering successive relegations, tumbling from the Premier League to League One in just two seasons.

So it does not make sense for a cash-strapped Sunderland side set to begin life in the third tier to hold on to a defender on Premier League wages.

The 28-year-old has two years left on his Sunderland contract and it will be interesting to see whether he becomes a man in demand once he returns from the World Cup.

Oviedo has been one of the brightest stars in Costa Rica’s disappointing campaign, impressing in the narrow 2-0 defeat to Brazil on Friday.
