Ligue 1 veteran Cedric Carrasso will leave Bordeaux this summer but will he finally move to Sunderland?
With transfer fees now bordering on the astronomical, it seems somewhat bizarre that David de Gea remains the most expensive goalkeeper in Premier League history six years after arriving at Manchester United for £18 million, as reported by the BBC.
Though it appears that record could be obliterated this summer. According to The Chronicle, Sunderland manager David Moyes claimed that the £20 million valuation reportedly placed on the head of ‘England’s next number one’ Jordan Pickford is “disrespectful.”
In fact, in the words of the Scot himself, you would be lucky to buy one glove with such an offer.
Therefore, you can guarantee that cash-strapped Sunderland will have a bit of money to play with this summer if, and surely when, Pickford departs with almost every club in the Premier League linked at some stage over the last few months.
However, if reports in Telefoot are anything to go by, the Black Cats may not decide to spend big to replace their highly-rated talisman.
The report claims that 35-year-old veteran Cedric Carrasso could be a potential arrival at the Stadium of Light this summer after Ligue 1 giants Bordeaux decided against renewing his contract after eight years at the club.
And although age is hardly on Carrasso’s side unlike the youthful Pickford, the one-time French international is certainly a safe pair of hands.
He conceded just 21 goals in 23 games in the French top flight last season, keeping nine clean sheets in the process.
Second time lucky?
The fact that Carrasso turned down a move to the Stadium of Light last summer, however, perhaps suggests that any deal will be far from easy to complete.
“Yes, during the last moments [Sunderland made an offer] but it wasn’t the [right] time,” the veteran ‘keeper stated after turning down a move to Wearside in August 2016, as reported by talkSPORT.
However, with Pickford on his way out, Carrasso could at least be confident of regular minutes; albeit in the Championship.
