Leeds United could lose Andy Lonergan to Championship rivals Sunderland but Liverpool’s forgotten man Adam Bogdan could succeed him at Elland Road.
If there is any team in the second tier who could do with an experienced Championship goalkeeper, it is Sunderland.
Robbin Ruiter and Jason Steele have shared the shot-stopping duties this season without ever really convincing on a regular basis. And the Yorkshire Evening Post reports that Sunderland’s desire for a consistent number one has seen them turn their attentions towards Leeds United’s Andy Lonergan.
The 34-year-old returned to Leeds for a second spell at Elland Road in the summer when leaving Wolves, but he has found himself behind Felix Wiedwald in the pecking order under Thomas Christiansen.
In fact, Lonergan’s last league appearance came in the 4-1 defeat against his former side at Molineux back in November.
Sunderland, however, are in a position to offer the ‘keeper regular first-team football. And Kit Symons, who is on the Black Cats’ coaching staff, knows Lonergan well having brought him to Fulham from Bolton back in 2015.
It is understood that Leeds are not keen to lose Lonergan but, if the stopper shows a desire to depart, the Whites will look to make a move for Liverpool’s Adam Bogdan.
The Hungarian international is fourth in the pecking order at Anfield, behind Simon Mignolet, Loris Karius and Danny Ward, and could be available on loan.
30-year-old Bogdan was relegated from the Championship during a spell at Wigan Athletic last season but could represent a solid, short-term replacement if Lonergan does indeed move on.
