Chelsea have allowed Ruben Sammut to have a trial at League One outfit Sunderland.
Ruben Sammut will play one more game during his trial period at the Stadium of Light before Sunderland decide whether to sign the midfielder from Chelsea, as reported by the Chronicle.
The Shields Gazette broke the news last week that the Black Cats were running the rule over the 21-year-old ahead of a potential move to Wearside.
A deep-lying midfielder in the mould of Lee Cattermole, Sammut has represented Scotland at U21 level and has even captained Chelsea’s reserve sides, having first joined the Blues all the way back in 2004.
But Sammut has failed to force his way into the first-team plans at Stamford Bridge and appears to be in danger of missing the boat at the age of 21.
He featured for the first time in Sunderland colours during last week’s Premier League Cup defeat to Stoke City but a decision is yet to be made on his future.
The Chronicle reports that Sammut will be given another chance to impress in red and white before the League One title challengers decide whether they want to offer him a contract.
