After a saga that rumbled on longer than anyone would have liked, Sunderland finally parted company with Didier Ndong in early October.
Two years after paying a club-record £13.6 million for the Gabonese midfielder, the Black Cats terminated his contract, arguing that he failed to turn up to pre-season training after the Wearside giants were relegated to League One, as reported by The Guardian.
But it seems that Ndong could finally be given a chance to get his career back on track.
Because iSport, a publication in his homeland, are reporting that the former Lorient ace is closing in on a move to the Russian top flight outfit FC Rostov.
And this is good news for Sunderland. Because the club is due to receive a healthy £3.5 million as compensation when Ndong finally finds a new club.
With just weeks to go until the January transfer window opens, this £3.5 million could be invested in new players although manager Jack Ross seems quite happy with his current squad.
Rostov have enjoyed an impressive start to the Russian Premiership season, sitting fourth and just two points behind Krasnodar in second.
