Ruben Sammut could leave Premier League powerhouses Chelsea for a fresh start at Jack Ross’s League One outfit Sunderland.

Sunderland have taken midfielder Ruben Sammut on trial from Chelsea, according to the Shields Gazette.
A Scotland U21 international who joined the Blues all the way back in 2004, the Maidstone-born youngster has not yet made a first-team appearance for the London giants despite making an impression on loan at Falkirk last season.
At the age of 21, Sammut is in danger of missing the boat, particularly given that his contract is due to expire in July.
The Shields Gazette report that he could be offered a fresh start in the North East with Sunderland taking him on trial. Sammut, who can also play in defence, made his first appearance for the Black Cats in their Premier League Cup defeat to Stoke City’s U23 side on Monday night.

It is well established that young players have struggled to make their mark at Chelsea, so Sunderland should represent an excellent opportunity for a player who could also represent England and Mali at international level.
Since Jack Ross took over last summer, the manager has given chances to Benji Kimpioka, Denver Hume and Bali Mumba while Josh Maja shone before his move to Bordeaux.
