Ross Sykes’ Accrington contract expires in the summer and he is allegedly a target for League One rivals Sunderland.
Sunderland are interested in signing Ross Sykes with the defender’s contract at Accrington Stanley due to expire in the summer, according to the Lancashire Telegraph.
A 19-year-old defender, the Burnley-born youngster spent last season on loan in non-league with Southport, but he has returned to the North West and established himself as a key player in John Coleman’s side.
Sykes has made 17 appearances for Accrington this season with Stanley comfortably established in mid-table. And the Lancashire Telegraph believe this form has caught the eye of League One rivals Sunderland.
It is claimed that Sykes is out of contract in the summer but he is set to be offered a new deal, with Accrington seeing the teenager as a big part of their plans going forward.
Sunderland appear to be scouring the market for a number of young talents, the Sunderland Echo reporting on Tuesday that Chelsea midfielder Ruben Sammut continues to play for the club during a trial period on Wearside.
Young Wolves defender Kevin Berkoe and Peterborough United starlet Andrea Borg are also under consideration with Sunderland considering whether to offer the trio terms.
