Papy Djilobodji could be on his way out of League One giants Sunderland at last with reports suggesting he is set for a Turkey switch.
Finally, some good news for Sunderland.
The Black Cats might have a new, ambitious owner in Stewart Donald who is determined to drag the club out of the austerity measures put in place during the Ellis Short regime, but the Black Cats still need to get a number of high-earners off their wage bill before they can start re-shaping their squad.
Fortunately, however, it seems that Papy Djilobodji is closing in on the exit.
As reported by Yeni Akit, Trabzonspor are interested in taking the out-of-favour centre-back to Turkey in what would be a big relief to Sunderland. Especially after Dijon, where Djilobodji spent last season on loan, appeared to decide against signing him on a permanent basis
The 29-year-old Senegal international is one of the players Sunderland simply must sell this summer, along with the likes of Lamine Kone, Jack Rodwell and Wahbi Khazri. Djilobodji was a disaster at the Stadium of Light following his £8 million move from Chelsea, for whom he played just one minute of football in an EFL Cup clash with Walsall.
He started 17 times as David Moyes’ side finished bottom of the Premier League in 2017. And, in shock claims provided by L’Equipe, Sunderland were still paying over half his wages during the loan spell at Dijon last season.
If a move to Trabzonspor happens, Djilobodji will not be missed.
