Championship and League One sides Swansea City and Sunderland are reportedly interested in signing Ayr United striker Lawrence Shankland.

Lawrence Shankland’s remarkable start to the season has certainly caught the eye.

The Scottish striker has plundered 26 goals in just 23 games in a blistering run of form, guiding his Ayr United side to the top of the Scottish Championship.

As a result, the Daily Record believes that up to 20 clubs are fighting to secure Shankland’s signature after the turn of the year, with Swansea City and Sunderland both in the chase.

The Glasgow-born 23-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and, in an ideal world, Ayr would sell him in January before bringing him back on loan for the next few months with their title challenge on the line.

The report adds, however, that Ayr are bracing themselves for Shankland’s exit. And it is understood that he will cost a bargain £400,000 – a tiny fee for a striker who cannot stop scoring right now.

The Mail claimed earlier in the week that a Swansea side that has struggled for goals this season were leading the chase, meaning Sunderland could be in last chance saloon if Jack Ross wants to bring his former St Mirren centre-forward to the Stadium of Light.
