Report suggests Wolves will pay a club-record fee for Diogo Jota

Diogo Jota is on loan at Wolverhampton Wanderers from La Liga giants Atletico Madrid but will be playing Premier League football next season.

We have known since back in January that Diogo Jota would become a permanent signing for Wolverhampton Wanderers this summer.

The Portuguese winger arrived at Molineux from Atletico Madrid on a season-long loan deal in July and has taken the Championship by storm as Nuno Espirito Santo’s side cruised to the league title.

A thrilling winger with an eye for goal, Jota has found the net 17 times for Wolves in 2017/18 – making him the club’s top scorer as they sealed a return to the Premier League.

But it has never really been clear how much Wolves would have to pay to keep Jota in the Black Country. The Express and Star, however, have suggested that it would exceed the £15.8 million they spend on current record signing Ruben Neves last summer.

The report states that Wolves’ Chinese owners Fosun have spent around £50 million since taking over the club back in 2016. And that figure is expected to rise to £67 million once a deal for Jota goes through.

This would suggest that Wolves have to pay somewhere around the figure of £17 million, which would make the former Porto loanee the most expensive player in the club’s history.

It really is a sign of the times at Molineux that Wolves can buy a truly elite talent like Jota, a player Atletico Madrid thought was going to be a massive talent when they signed him from Pacos Ferreira in 2016.
