Anderlecht loanee Matz Sels indicated that he’d be keen to return to Newcastle United but a first ever Premier League appearance looks unlikely.

Matz Sels’ story at Newcastle United seemed to be over when the out-of-favour goalkeeper returned to Belgium last summer with Anderlecht.

Back in 2016, Newcastle paid Gent £5 million to make Sels the most expensive goalkeeper in the club’s history and he started the Championship winning campaign as The Magpies’ number one.

But after a series of mistakes, Sels was dropped in September, replaced by Karl Darlow, and never played a league game for Rafa Benitez again.

Speaking to Sport Voetbal last month, however, the 26-year-old admitted that he would not be against a chance to revive a Newcastle career that looked to be finished already.

“Newcastle is not a closed chapter for me. I am still grateful to Rafael Benítez for having signed me,” Sels told Sport Voetbal.

But it seems that Newcastle themselves have moved on.

The Chronicle states that the Tyneside giants have made securing a permanent deal for Sparta Prague loanee Martin Dubravka their priority, with the Slovakian goalkeeper having impressed hugely since arriving in January.

And with Anderlecht keen to keep Sels once his temporary deal comes to an end, it is understood that Newcastle have placed a £6 million price-tag on the shot-stopper’s head.

It seems that Sels, then, will be denied the chance to show Newcastle supporters why the club invested in him almost two years ago.
