Leeds United wanted Emiliano Martinez at Elland Road in January, with the Arsenal loanee struggling for opportunities in La Liga.
Leeds United will make a new goalkeeper one of their top priorities during the summer transfer window and that should come as no surprise.
The fact that Bailey Peacock-Farrell, the academy graduate who had only ever played one senior game before last month, is now Leeds’ number one should tell you a lot about how Felix Wiedwald and Andy Lonergan have performed this season.
But if Leeds were hoping to turn their attention to Emiliano Martinez again, it seems they may be up against it.
But amid concerns about the future of first-choice Vicente Guaita, Getafe were determined to keep Martinez at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez.
The 25-year-old is not only a very talented goalkeeper, he also has plenty of Championship experience, having enjoyed loan spells at Sheffield Wednesday, Rotherham and Wolves in the second tier. So you can see why Leeds wanted him.
But it seems that Leeds may be wasting their time if they attempted to make another move for Martinez this summer when he returns to The Emirates.
Because Football London suggests that Martinez could have a part to play in Arsenal’s first-team with Petr Cech declining and David Ospina, who is desperate for more regular first-team action, certain to depart. Martinez, who has been at Arsenal since 2010, is rated very highly at the North London giants.
So while Martinez would no doubt benefit from the first-team football that could come his way at Elland Road, it appears that a place in Arsenal’s plans is within the South American’s grasp after all.
It could be a case of too little too late for Leeds.
