Matthew Pennington is unlikely to be playing Premier League football with Everton next season so a loan move to Championship Stoke City makes sense.

Everton defender Matthew Pennington could be heading back to the Championship again this summer with Stoke City interested, according to the Mail.

The 24-year-old centre-back who rose through the ranks at Goodison Park to make nine first-team appearances for the Toffees, Pennington has found himself well down the pecking order since Marco Silva took over last summer.

After spending the 2017/18 campaign at Leeds United, the Warrington-born defender spent last season at Ipswich Town, playing 30 league games as the Tractor Boys finished bottom of the table.

Despite that chastening spell at Portman Road, Pennington still has plenty of offers with the Mail reporting that he has emerged as a target for Stoke.

Nathan Jones is desperate to add some depth to his defence having recently bid farewell to Welsh veteran Ashley Williams, who ironically spent last season on loan at the Bet365 Stadium from Merseyside giants Everton.

The Liverpool Echo reported last week that The Toffees could consider selling Pennington on a permanent basis with Wigan Athletic and Derby County also interested.

But Stoke will be hoping to sign a second Everton centre-back in the space of 12 months.
