Leeds United are set to miss out on Tottenham Hotspur defender Cameron Carter-Vickers with Championship rivals Stoke City set to win the race.
According to the Sun on the penultimate day of the transfer window, Leeds United were at the front of the queue to sign Tottenham Hotspur defender Cameron Carter-Vickers.
A talented and technically-gifted centre-half, the American international was not only a player who looked perfect for Marcelo Biela’s ball-playing principles, he would also have filled the void created by Pontus Jansson’s controversial exit while providing competition and depth in defence.
Carter-Vickers has plenty of Championship experience too, having spent last season at Swansea City.
With Spurs willing to let Carter-Vickers leave North London on loan, the prospect of signing the 21-year-old without spending a penny made this potential deal even more alluring.
But, with just hours to go, Leeds’ best-laid plans have gone suddenly awry. And they have Nathan Jones to thank for that.
According to TEAMtalk, Jones has used his deft Welsh tones to lure Carter-Vickers to Stoke City instead with The Potters now set to snap up the Southend-born stopper from right under Leeds’ nose.
And this puts the pre-season title favourites in a rather awkward position. Leeds are putting so much focus into signing a replacement for Kemar Roofe on deadline day though missing out on Carter-Vickers could now force them into the market for a centre-half too.
