Newcastle United are reportedly set to appoint Sheffield Wednesday boss Steve Bruce as their new manager.

Steve Bruce has already made signing a striker his top priority with the Sheffield Wednesday boss expected to be handed his dream job at Newcastle United in the coming days, according to the Sun (12 July, page 55).
No one can doubt Bruce’s commitment or his love for this grand old club. Whether he is the right man to take over the Premier League’s perennial sleeping giant, however, well that is another matter entirely.
Newcastle fans have been rather vocal in their opposition towards the idea of Bruce replacing Rafa Benitez, a manager with a Champions League winner’s medal and two La Liga titles on his CV.
So the Geordie tactician, who has apparently agreed to take over at St James’ Park with his appointment set to be confirmed at the weekend, will return to his roots under huge pressure to get things right.

And, to make his task easier, the Sun reports that owner Mike Ashley will hand Bruce a £50 million transfer kitty with the former Sunderland boss expected to spend much of that on bringing a new striker to St James’ Park.
Given that Salomon Rondon has returned to West Brom and Ayoze Perez has swapped Tyneside for Leicester City, Newcastle’s squad looks badly short of quality in the final third. It will be Bruce’s first task to change that as quickly as possible.
