Championship strugglers Barnsley have turned their attention to St Mirren boss Jack Ross after Paul Heckingbottom departed Oakwell.

Barnsley’s pursuit of a new manager goes on.

The South Yorkshire club lost 42-year-old manager Paul Heckingbottom to local rivals Leeds United just four days after he signed a new rolling contract at Oakwell and, as yet, it appears unclear who will replace him.

The experienced Simon Grayson (below) was heavily linked but he has replaced Stuart McCall at Bradford instead. And Danny Cowley, the rising star of English coaching who led Lincoln back into the football league, is happy enough at Sincil Bank for now.

So, according to the Scottish Sun, the Tykes have now turned their attention to St Mirren boss Jack Ross.

It is understood that Barnsley immediately expressed an interest in the 41-year-old Buddies manager when the equally youthful Heckingbottom departed, and contacted the Scottish Championship leaders last weekend.

And the Scottish Sun adds that St Mirren have now, albeit reluctantly, given Barnsley permission to speak to Ross about taking over at Oakwell.

Scotland has produced a wide range of exciting young managers in recent years and Ross certainly fits the bill. He led Alloa Athletic to second place in the third tier of Scottish football before taking over at St Mirren in 2016, and has transformed the Buddies from relegation candidates to promotion favourites inside 16 months.

But will he really depart St Mirren with the club top of the Championship to take over a Barnsley side in danger of relegation?
