Mohamed Elyounoussi inspired Basel’s 2-1 Champions League win against Manchester City in front of scouts from Premier League strugglers Southampton.

Southampton picked a very good time to scout Mohamed Elyounoussi.
The Basel winger was in superb form as the Swiss side stunned Manchester City in the Champions League round of 16 second leg on Wednesday night. Basel were unable to overturn their 4-0 first-leg deficit but softened the blow with a very impressive 2-1 win at the Etihad, inspired by the excellent Elyounoussi.
It was he who lashed home the equaliser to cancel out Gabriel Jesus’ early strike, before setting up the second for Michael Lang, who also scored a winner against Manchester United in the group stage.

It is understood that Basel are bracing themselves for offers for the 23-year-old, who has seven goals and 13 assists this season, with Southampton liking the fact that he can play in a variety of positions across the forward line.

We reported back in May of last year that the Saints were closely following the Norwegian international and his continued excellence in Basel colours means he is still in their sights.
Southampton have lacked attacking inspiration all season so Elyounoussi’s creativity and impressive end product means it would be no surprise if they finally made their move come the summer.
