Southampton wanted Pione Sisto at St Mary’s back in 2016 and the Premier League strugglers are interested again wtih the winger starring in La Liga.

Back in March 2016, The Mirror report that Southampton were interested in a rising Danish starlet by the name of Pione Sisto.

The electric winger had enhanced his reputation no end with an excellent goalscoring performance against Manchester United for FC Midtjylland in the Europa League and, despite interest from Everton and Leicester City, The Saints had identified him as a replacement for the Liverpool-bound Sadio Mane.

Five months later, however, Sisto signed for La Liga outfit Celta Vigo instead for £4 million.

But, according to the Scottish Sun, Southampton have renewed their interest with this summer’s transfer window right around the corner.

Sisto remains a raw, erratic and at times gallingly frustrating figure but there is no doubting his ability. A left winger who cuts inside onto his favoured right foot, the 23-year-old has set up nine goals in La Liga this season, a tally only Lionel Messi can beat.

It is understood that Sisto has a £36 million release clause in his contract at the Balaidos but Celta would consider selling him for half that – which would put the winger on the market for around £18 million this summer, just shy of the club-record fee they paid Monaco for Guido Carillo back in January.

It goes without saying that a deal would only be possible if Southampton preserve their Premier League status.

But, if they do, Sisto is the kind of speedy, unpredictable and creative force the club desperately need.
