Former Lazio defender Wesley Hoedt has not played a Premier League game since Ralph Hasenhuttl took over at Southampton in December.
It is fair to say Wesley Hoedt has not quite justified the £15 million transfer fee Southampton paid Lazio to sign him in the summer of 2017.
The Dutch international arrived at St Mary’s with a reputation as a talented, modern centre-half equally capable of blocking shots as he is bringing the ball out from the back with superb cross-field passes.
But Hoedt’s spell on the South Coast has been characterised by mistakes more than anything else, and the fact that he has not played a single minute of Premier League football since Ralph Hasenhuttl took over from Mark Hughes a month ago speaks volumes.
The Sun (3 January, page 49) reports that the former RB Leipzig boss is open to letting Hoedt leave this month with the defender having been put up for sale by Southampton.
Striker Manolo Gabbiadini, who arrived from Serie A like Hoedt, is also understood to be available with Italian duo AC Milan and Fiorentina interested.
It remains to be seen how much Southampton would want for 24-year-old Hoedt, who has fallen behind Jack Stephens, Maya Yoshida and Jan Bednarek in the pecking order with Jannick Vestergaard also on the books.
