Thomas Goiginger’s outstanding season in the Austrian Bundesliga has resulted in links with Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Southampton.
Southampton are looking to reinforce their attacking options by signing Austrian forward Thomas Goiginger from LASK Linz this summer, according to the Mail.
Ralph Hasenhuttl led the Saints to Premier League survival last season but a record of 45 goals in 38 games makes it clear where the club must improve, despite the best efforts of the terrific Nathan Redmond.
Goiginger, meanwhile, may be something of an unknown but he is a player who would surely give Southampton’s attack a much needed spark.
With 14 goals and 17 assists to his name, the versatile forward enjoyed the best season of his career in 2018/19, helping LASK Linz finish second behind Red Bull Salzburg in the Austrian Bundesliga table.
Goiginger was recently rewarded with a first ever call-up for the Austrian national team to boot.
The Mail reports that Southampton are now set to make a £5 million bid as they look to snap up the prolific wide man on a bargain deal. Linz understandably want to keep their star man but there is an acceptance that Goiginger would be tempted by a switch to the Premier League.
In stark contrast, however the 26-year-old didn’t seem too keen when asked about a potential move to Southampton earlier this month.
“I cannot say much about (the interest) because I’m not really into it,” Goiginger told Sky.
“In football, everything can always go very fast, but as it looks now, I’ll stay at the LASK.”
