Report: Southampton midfielder Jordy Clasie set to seal Feyenoord return

After three years at the Premier League club, Dutchman Jordy Clasie is reportedly leaving Southampton for a return to Eredivisie side Feyenoord.

After three rather unsuccessful years on the books of Southampton, it seems that the career of Jordy Clasie is about to go full circle.

The tenacious midfielder was one of the most highly-rated prospects in Dutch football when he moved to St Mary’s from Feyenoord in 2015, setting the Saints back about £8 million.

But starring in the Eredivisie is one thing, adapting to life in the Premier League an altogether different challenge. Clasie struggled to deal with the pace of things over in England and, as a result, quickly slipped down the pecking order.

The 27-year-old spent last season on loan in Belgium with Club Brugge. And, despite impressing as they won the Jupiler League title, it seems that is not enough to earn Clasie a second chance at Southampton.

Voetbal International reports that Clasie wants to return to Feyenoord this summer, three years after departing De Kuip, and the expectation is that a deal will be completed in the near future.

The 17-time international is a popular figure among the Feyenoord support and it is understood that he will be signed as a replacement for the influential Karim El-Ahmadi. The 33-year-old former Aston Villa midfielder, who won the Eredivisie’s Player of the Year award as Feyenoord won the title in 2017, is joining Saudi side Al-Ittihad.
