Southampton have stepped up their interest in Moussa Djenepo, with Le Soir reporting that they have made a £20 million bid for the Standard Liege forward.
The Saints secured their Premier League safety a fortnight ago but head coach Ralph Hasenhuttl will be desperate to build on the club’s disappointing bottom half finish in his first full season at St Mary’s.
With no one in Southampton’s squad scoring more than seven Premier League goals this season, it is clear where the club need to strengthen.
So with 11 goals and six assists to his name this season, Djenepo looks like the sort of mercurial creative talent who would immediately enhance Hasenhuttl’s front line.
The Mali international has exploded onto the scene over the last few months and Le Soir reports that he held talks with Southampton last week about a potential move to English football.
The South Coast club are now reported to have made an official bid worth £20 million, a fee that would make Djenepo the second biggest export in the history of the Belgian top flight.
Djenepo’s potential arrival could raise questions about the future of Mohamed Elyounoussi, who has made just eight starts in a forgettable debut season at Southampton.
