Joakim Maehle has been excellent as KRC Genk lead the Jupiler League table, with a move to the Premier League with Southampton reportedly possible.
KRC Genk may be forced to sell Joakim Maehle in the summer if Southampton return with an offer of over £11 million, according to Walfoot.
Genk are 11 points clear at the top of the Jupiler League table as it stands and the form of Danish U21 international Maehle has been a major part of their success. The right-back has been a huge threat this season, producing eight assists in all competitions with his rampaging runs down the flank.
According to the Mail, Maehle’s form has caught the eye of Southampton, who loaned their most experienced right-back Cedric Soares out to Inter Milan in January with an option to buy.
It is understood that the Saints offered £10.5 million, a bid that Genk turned down. But Walfoot’s claims suggest that the Belgian league leaders could be forced to bid farewell to their prized asset should Southampton raise their bid.
You could hardly blame Genk for refusing to sell Maehle in January, given that they have a domestic title in their sights and are also set to face Slavia Prague in the Europa League round of 32.
