Premier League rivals Southampton are reportedly monitoring Paulo Sousa as a possible replacement for under-fire Mark Hughes.
It remains to be seen whether Southampton’s 3-2 defeat to fellow Premier League strugglers Fulham on Saturday will prove fatal for Mark Hughes. But it certainly hasn’t done the Welshman’s short-term managerial prospects much good.
The Mirror (26 November, page 60) reports that The Saints are already contemplating replacements for Hughes, and are interested in Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers and the former Ajax and Borussia Dortmund boss Peter Bosz.
Now, Calciomercato has thrown another name into the frame and, like Rodgers, he is a man who has previously coached at the Liberty Stadium – Paulo Sousa.
The 48-year-old, who has enjoyed a nomadic managerial career, is currently without a job after leaving Tianjin Quanjian in October. After spells at QPR, Swansea and Leicester, Sousa has spent time in Italy and Hungary and winning league titles in Switzerland and Israel with Basel and Maccabi Tel Aviv respectively.
Calciomercato adds that Sousa would be interested in a return to England, although he’d ideally prefer a side with European ambitions.
Interestingly, the report also says that Leicester City considered making a move to bring the Portuguese back to the King Power Stadium about six weeks ago. Sousa took charge of just 12 games with The Foxes between July and October 2010. But Claude Puel’s position seems relatively safe for now.
