Oghenekaro Etebo is arguably African football’s most exciting young midfielder – but will he be on Sheffield Wednesday’s radar?
You only need to look at the careers of one-time wonderkids Freddy Adu, Gai Assulin and Nick Powell to learn that being described as the second coming of a true global superstar is often more of a hindrance than a help.
And, like the so-called ‘New Pele’, ‘New Messi’ and ‘New Rooney’, Oghenekaro Etebo has the added pressure of being likened to one of the leading players in his position.
The 21-year-old Nigerian midfielder has been increasingly likened to Paul Pogba in the las after exploding onto the scene with Portuguese club Feirense. And, perhaps understandably, that means Etebo has been subjected to a rather large amount of interest.
With Iberian head coach Carlos Carvalhal at the helm, Sheffield Wednesday have signed a number of players from Portuguese football over the last couple of seasons – and currently boast Lucas Joao, Frederico Venancio and Marco Matias in their current squad.
Etebo, however, could be the best of the lot if he caught Sheffield Wednesday’s eye on Friday night. The dynamic youngster, who was crowned African football’s Most Promising Talent in 2015, has three goals in ten games this season, and is renowned for his forceful runs and skill in possession.
OwnGoal Nigeria reported back in March that Newcastle United had also watched Etebo in action. The Magpies eye for a bargain, combined with Etebo’s huge potential, means he should remain on the club’s radar as he continues to build a reputation.
Though Sheffield Wednesday could pull off one of the most astute signings in recent Championship history if they attempt to bring Nigeria’s Pogba to Hillsborough.
