Lee Cattermole is expected to reunite with Steve Bruce in the Championship with Sheffield Wednesday after League One Sunderland let him go.

Sheffield Wednesday are set to make a renewed effort to bring Lee Cattermole to Hillsborough after the experienced midfielder was released by Sunderland on Monday, according to the Northern Echo.
Despite having another 12 months left on his contract, Cattermole bid an emotional farewell to the Stadium of Light after it was announced that he would have the remainder of his deal torn up.
The former Middlesbrough and Wigan enforcer might have enjoyed an impressive 2018/19 campaign under Jack Ross, scoring a career-high seven goals in all competitions, but his £35,000 a week wages just weren’t viable for a League One club.
It was those wages, meanwhile, that initially looked like scuppering a move to Sheffield Wednesday.
But the Northern Echo reports that, with Cattermole now a free agent, the door has swung open for Sheffield Wednesday to hold a new round of talks for the now unattached 31-year-old.

Though it remains to be seen whether Cattermole is willing to accept a pay cut in order to reunite with his former Sunderland boss Steve Bruce in the Steel City.
In fact, Bruce paid £6 million to when signing Cattermole ten years ago, comparing him to Roy Keane and lauding his ‘fiercely competitive’ nature, as reported by the Guardian.
No longer a feisty young whippersnapper, the now 31-year-old would offer experience and leadership in the Wednesday dressing room.
