Report: Sheffield Wednesday consider signing Venancio permanently

Vitoria Setubal loanee Federico Venancio is a regular starter for Sheffield Wednesday these days and could be sticking around at Hillsborough.

Federico Venancio has certainly divided Sheffield Wednesday supporters since moving to Hillsborough on loan from Vitoria Setubal last summer.

It took until Carlos Carvalhal’s sacking in late December for the centre-back to be given his chance, but he has been a regular under Jos Luhukay. Aided by the injuries suffered by Tom Lees and Joost Van Aken, Venancio has also been helped by the former Hertha Berlin boss’s switch to a three-man back line and is one of the first names on the team-sheet these days.

Whether he has done enough to justify Wednesday signing him permanently, however, remains to be seen.

As reported by A Bola, the Yorkshire side are considering triggering the clause that will allow them to make his loan move permanent and it is understood that he would cost somewhere in the region of £2.6 million.

This would make Venancio one of the most expensive defenders in Wednesday’s history and, after just 11 Championship appearances and a run of 10 goals conceded in their last three games with the 25-year-old at the back, the jury is definitely out on whether he is worth such a fee.

It is likely that Wednesday would have to sell a player or two to finance the deal, but the lack of depth at centre-half means it would be little surprise if they were keen to get Venancio tied down and fast.
