Jeff Hendrick didn’t feature as Burnley thrashed Southampton in their Premier League opener but could he join Chris Wilder’s Blades in the new year?

Sheffield United are already planning a January swoop for Burnley midfielder Jeff Hendrick, according to the Sun (11 August, page 59).

The Blades certainly made their mark over the summer, breaking their transfer record four times in preparation for Premier League life after spending the last 12 years in the lower divisions.

But it seems that Chris Wilder is already planning further additions despite the fact that the new season is just one game old.

The Sun reports that Sheffield United are keen to sign Republic of Ireland international Hendrick in the hope that Burnley will be tempted to accept a cut-price deal in the winter.

The Clarets paid a club-record £10.5 million to sign the midfielder from Derby County in the summer of 2016 and he is now entering the final 12 months of his contract. So Sean Dyche may be forced to cash in and sell Hendrick on the cheap by the time January rolls around.

The 27-year-old was left on the bench and failed to appear throughout Burnley’s 3-0 thrashing of Southampton on Saturday with Sean Dyche clearly preferring Jack Cork and Ashley Westwood in the centre of the park.

So Hendrick has just five months to show why he deserves to be offered a new deal by Burnley as Sheffield United circle.
