Sean Dyche’s Burnley could reportedly release Joe Hart and this opens the door for a potential move to Chris Wilder’s Premier League newcomers.

Sheffield United are mulling over a move for Burnley bench-warmer Joe Hart as Chris Wilder looks to bring at least one new goalkeeper to Bramall Lane before the end of the transfer window, as reported by the Mail.

It almost goes without saying that Dean Henderson, who shone in the Steel City during a loan spell from Manchester United last season, is the Blades’ first choice.

The England U21 international is expected to return sooner rather than later although, according to the Mail, Sheffield United have alternatives lined up in case something goes wrong.

And that has put Hart firmly in their sights.

The Mirror (19 July, page 52) claims that Burnley could allow the former Manchester City stopper to leave Turf Moor on a free transfer, despite only joining the club on a two-year deal last summer.

So a player with 75 England caps and two Premier League winners’ medals could soon be available for absolutely nothing. But it’s a measure of how far Hart has fallen in recent years that his potential arrival is likely to split Sheffield United fans right down the middle.

Hart was once an undisputed world-class goalkeeper but the 32-year-old has looked a shadow of his former self even during the Manuel Pellegrini days at Manchester City. While Henderson is a rising star of English goalkeeping, Hart is precisely the opposite.
