Robbin Ruiter will leave League One Sunderland this summer but he is not returning to the Eredivisie with Sparta Rotterdam.
Robbin Ruiter has rejected the chance to join Sparta Rotterdam when his Sunderland contract expires, according to AD.
The 32-year-old shot-stopper appears to have played his final game for the Black Cats, having fallen out of favour during Jack Ross’s debut season at the Stadium of Light.
Ruiter made just five appearances during the 2018/19 campaign, one coming in the league, as he was displaced by Scotland international Jon McLaughlin.
And Sunderland’s owner Stuart Donald confirmed to Roker Report last month that Ruiter is set to leave the Wearside giants this summer.
Where he ends up remains to be seen but it seems that a return to Holland for the experienced Dutchman is not on the cards.
According to AD, Ruiter has rejected the chance to join Sparta Rotterdam, who sealed their return to the Eredivisie last month after just one year away. A goalkeeper who spent his entire career in the Netherlands with Volendam and Utrecht before joining Sunderland in 2017 is keen to continue plying his trade on foreign shores.
The report adds that clubs in Spain are also interested and they could offer Ruiter what he is looking for.
