Stefano Okaka has barely played for Watford all season and could join Wolves in January with the Championship leaders renewing their interest.
Wolves were left frustrated on the final day of an otherwise exceptional transfer window. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side wanted one more striker to put the icing on an impressive squad but Stefano Okaka was unwilling to leave Watford and drop down a division, as reported by the Express and Star.
Less than three months later, however, the four-time Italy international may be regretting that decision. Since starting and scoring in the 3-3 opening day draw with Liverpool, Okaka has played just a minute of Premier League football – coming in the closing seconds of that last-gasp defeat to Everton a month ago.
And according to The Mirror (6th December, page 48), Okaka has a rocky relationship with Hornets boss Marco Silva and will therefore be allowed to leave Vicarage Road in January. And Wolves are waiting in the wings once again.
Just to add credence to those earlier reports, The Express adds that Okaka believes he has had no chance of reviving his relationship with Silva since being omitted from the squad to face Bristol City in the EFL Cup back in August.
Therefore, it is understood that Okaka realises that the time is right to leave Watford – less than half a season after he turned down offers in favour of fighting for his place.
Okaka is not the most prolific of goalscorers, netting just five times in the Premier League, but his power and presence in attack would give Wolves a different option and much-needed depth in their frontline.
As it stands, Leo Bonatini is the only senior centre-forward at Wolves’ disposal.
