Karl Darlow hasn’t played a single Premier League game this season with Martin Dubravka staying as Steve Bruce’s number one at Newcastle United.
Karl Darlow is confident that he will be handed a new contract at Newcastle United, according to the Chronicle, with his current deal due to expire at the end of the season.
The former Nottingham Forest youngster will always have a special place in the heart of Newcastle fans after playing a key role as Rafa Benitez’s Magpies stormed back to the Premier League at the first time of asking in 2017, winning the Championship title and keeping 15 clean sheets along the way.
But he has been forced to sit on the bench and watch Martin Dubravka establish himself as the club’s undisputed number one over the course of almost two years and, with Darlow set to become a free agent at the end of the season, questions have been asked about whether he has a future at St James’ Park.
The Chronicle, however, claims that the 28-year-old expects to still be a Newcastle player by the time next season kicks off, though it is perhaps a surprise that he is content with life as a back up.
With Newcastle knocked out of the EFL Cup in their first game in the competition, it feels very unlikely that Darlow will be feature again until the FA Cup kicks off in January unless Dubravka endures a dramatic fall from grace or a long-term injury.
