Rangers fans wanted Kilmarnock manager Steve Clarke but the Scottish Premiership boss will not be swapping Rugby Park for Ibrox.
It seems that Rangers have turned to Steven Gerrard as their new manager and no one saw that coming.
The 37-year-old may have no experience at the top level of coaching, instead taking charge of Liverpool’s U18s since his retirement from playing back in 2016, but the Daily Record claims that talks have taken place between Rangers and Gerrard about potentially taking over at Ibrox.
But their interest in the former Liverpool captain has only emerged after Steve Clarke said no, the Daily Record adds.
Clarke has done a sensational job since being appointed by Kilmarnock back in the autumn, notably winning against both Rangers and Celtic and turning the Rugby Park side into genuine Europa League candidates.
And, unlike Gerrard, the 54-year-old has a long and varied CV, having worked at Chelsea, Liverpool, West Ham, Aston Villa and Newcastle in a coaching capacity and taking the top job at West Brom and Reading.
It is understood that Rangers identified Clarke as a serious candidate to replace Graeme Murty. But, when trying to enter talks, they were told that he had absolutely no interest in leaving Kilmarnock as he is totally committed to his job in Ayrshire.
Clarke would have been a popular appointment, with Rangers fans taking to Twitter over the last month demanding that the experienced coach be brought in after masterminding marvellous success at Killie.
Whether Gerrard has so many supporters among the Ibrox faithful remains to be seen.
