Scottish Premiership giants Rangers have been snubbed by Dylan McGeouch, who has swapped Hibernian for League One Sunderland instead.
It should not be underestimated just how impressive Sunderland’s signing of Dylan McGeouch really is.
The former Celtic youngster has just enjoyed the best season of his career north of the border, starring in a Hibernian side that finished fourth in their first season back in the top flight while being rewarded with a long-awaited international debut in Scotland colours.
After rejecting a new contract with Hibernian, McGeouch has become Sunderland’s latest signing as they aim to escape from League One at the first time of asking.
And, to make the deal even more impressive, the Northern Echo points out that Scottish Premiership giants Rangers had made a very attractive offer to the 25-year-old free agent.
Steven Gerrard’s side were heavily linked with the gifted McGeouch before Sunderland emerged as front-runners, but this is the first time that reports have emerged that Rangers actually offered him a contract.
Gerrard’s arrival at Ibrox has given Rangers much more pulling power in the transfer market but McGeouch, who represented the Glasgow giants at youth level between 2008 and 2011, obviously felt that Sunderland represented a better opportunity despite suffering successive relegations in the last two seasons.
Missing out on one of the best midfielders in Scotland is undoubtedly a blow for Rangers, albeit one softened by the arrivals of Scott Arfield and Ovie Ejaria.
