Ibrox flop Carlos Pena is set to return to Rangers after a loan spell in Mexico, but will he get a second chance in the Scottish Premiership?

Carlos Pena of Rangers is challenged by Scott Brown of Celtic during the Scottish Premier League match between Celtic and Rangers at Celtic Park on December 30, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

With Carlos Pena seeing his loan spell at Necaxa cut short in November, and the president of Liga MX rivals Club Leon denying reports that they were keen to offer the midfielder a lifeline this week, the Rangers flop once again finds his future up in the air.

Pena, who moved to Rangers for £2.2 million in the summer of 2017, spent just half a season in Scotland before returning to his homeland on loan. But he has endured a difficult year both on and off the pitch and is due back in Glasgow in January after failing to kick-start his career back in Mexico.

Could Pena be offered the chance to salvage his Rangers career and be handed a clean slate by Steven Gerrard?

Well, probably not.

The Scottish Sun reports that Rangers are desperate to offload the 28-year-old as soon as possible. Pena still has 18 months left on his £20,000-a-week deal and, if he is not going to play, would be little more than an expensive drain on resources.

With Rangers given the green light to bring former captain Steven Davis back to the club from Southampton in January, the Sun adds, Pena is likely to be well down the pecking order.
