Rangers have now signed three new centre-backs this summer. Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic have already formed a very promising partnership at the back while Joe Worrall has arrived on loan from Nottingham Forest on deadline day.

But Worrall might not be their only last-ditch defensive addition.

Rangers have been linked with 38-year-old free-agent Gareth McAuley since the start of the summer and he is still without a club as things stand. But that could change in the next few hours.

According to Herald Scotland, Rangers have been monitoring the veteran Northern Irishman for six months now. And they made a serious move to sign him for the first time after the nail-biting Europa League qualifying victory over FC Ufa on Thursday afternoon.

The report adds that McAuley had been close to signing for Hearts before failing to come to terms with the Edinburgh side while the former West Brom man has also agreed a deal with an as-yet unknown club.

But Rangers now appear to be leading the chase. Herald Scotland add that McAuley, who will turn 39 in December, is expected to follow Worrall to Ibrox on deadline-day.

He will be the third 30-something that Rangers sign this summer after Allan McGregor and Kyle Lafferty with manager Steven Gerrard keen to add experienced leaders who can influence his side on and off the pitch.
